Couric Can't Save Evening News
Katie Couric is taking over at CBS Evening News. But I don't think even a star like Couric can save a slowly dying form.

As I suggested in a comment to the Donklephant piece, Cronkite misses the point. What he have here isn’t so much a case Americans no longer wanting to be informed, as one of Americans no longer being informed with the same set of facts. (Think about it: How often are words like "dhimmitude" and taqiyya, or Islamic supremacist groups like Hizb ut-Tahrir, all of which are routinely mentioned in Long War discussions on the right side of the blogosphere, also used on sites like Daily Kos or MyDD, other than in selected quotes from the right to make them look like bigots?)
This may actually bode worse for the nation than if Americans were merely sinking into apathy as Cronkite claims. If the news marketplace has become so fragmented that citizens can’t even agree upon a common set of facts to form the basis of a national debate, that sounds to me like a recipe for a secular Western version of present-day Iraq - not quite a civil war (yet), but too close for comfort.
I dont think that Couric can save a slowly dying CBS. But at least they both have the same morals - none!
